Used Car or Brand-New Car in Thailand: Which Is Better Value?

The same amount of money can buy either a small brand-new car or a used car one size up. Neither choice is right for everyone, but one of them is right for you.

Depreciation: where used cars win outright

A new car loses value fastest in its first two or three years, and after that the price falls more and more slowly. When you buy a car three to five years old, the first owner has already absorbed the biggest chunk of depreciation.

If you change cars every three or four years, this matters more to your wallet than anything else on this page. But if you keep one car for ten years until it is worn out, the early depreciation averages out until the difference is barely there.

Interest: where new cars have the edge

Hire-purchase interest on used cars is always higher than on new cars, and the older the car, the higher the rate. New cars also get low-interest campaigns from carmakers from time to time, which used cars do not.

If you pay cash, this point does not affect you at all. But if you finance over a long term, compare the total amount paid over the whole contract, not the car price. Use the loan calculator with the interest rate for each option and see the difference.

Warranty and repair costs

A brand-new car comes with a manufacturer warranty, and in the early years there are almost no costs beyond scheduled servicing. With a used car that is out of warranty, every baht of repairs is yours.

Some young used cars still have factory warranty left. Ask the seller, and call the service center with the chassis number (VIN) to check when the warranty ends and whether it can be transferred to a new owner.

If you choose a used car, set aside a repair fund from the day you buy. A car financed to the limit with nothing left for repairs is the car that ends up parked and broken while you are still paying for it.

Which one suits you

A brand-new car suits people who will keep this car for more than seven or eight years, do not want to gamble on condition, have no garage or car-savvy friend to ask, and can get a low campaign interest rate.

A used car suits people who pay cash or can put down a large down payment, want a bigger car or higher trim than a new-car budget allows, plan to change cars within a few years, and are willing to spend time inspecting the car carefully.

If you go used, two things are a must: inspect the car before you buy and protect yourself from scams. Do both properly and most of the risk of buying used goes away.

Frequently asked questions

What age of used car is the best value?

Generally three to seven years. The price has dropped a lot from new, but the car has not yet reached the age when major parts start failing one by one. It also depends on the model and how each car has been looked after.

If I find a problem after buying a used car, who can I claim from?

Buying directly from the owner is buying as-is, with no warranty, so you need to check everything before you pay. This website is a listing platform. It does not inspect cars and does not guarantee any car.
